El Tapatio – My RI Home for Tex-Mex

Growing up in Texas, the flavors of Tex-Mex cuisine were a staple of my culinary life. The sizzle of fajitas, the rich, smoky aroma of enchiladas, and the tangy zest of freshly made pico de gallo were more than just meals—they were experiences that brought people together. As I moved farther from the Lone Star State, I found myself yearning for those familiar tastes, the kind that could transport me back to warm evenings spent with family and friends.

Finding authentic Tex-Mex outside of Texas has always been a challenge. Many places try, but few succeed in capturing that perfect blend of spices, the balance of heat and flavor that defines true Tex-Mex. So, imagine my delight when I stumbled upon a restaurant that brought those cherished flavors to life once more. It was like finding a piece of home in the most unexpected place.

My journey to rediscover the flavors of Texas led me to a quaint restaurant in Cranston, on Atwood Avenue. From the moment I stepped inside El Tapatio, I felt a wave of nostalgia wash over me. The brightly painted wooden furniture, imported directly from Mexico, set the stage for an authentic experience. The walls were adorned with vibrant artwork and decor that transported me straight to a lively Mexican mercado. Even the music, a lively mix of traditional and contemporary Mexican tunes, felt just right.

But it was the food that truly captured my heart. The joy of finding a restaurant that knows exactly what kind of sauce belongs on a chicken enchilada or how to properly steam a tamale is indescribable. Each bite was a delightful reminder of home—the rich, savory sauces, the perfectly balanced spices, and the tender, flavorful meats. It was clear that El Tapatio understood the essence of Tex-Mex cuisine.

The only downside? There was simply too much to try in one visit. I found myself wishing for a bigger appetite, just so I could savor every dish on the menu. But that just means I have a reason to return, again and again.

Until I couldn’t.

After ten years, they closed the doors, and I had to go without. No more sizzling fajitas, their aroma filling the air with a promise of a hearty meal. No more savory sauces, rich and complex, coating every bite with layers of flavor. No more warm flour tortillas, soft and pliable, perfect for wrapping around tender meats and fresh vegetables. No more sopapillas, their crispy, golden exterior giving way to a sweet, airy center. No more flan, its creamy texture and caramel sweetness a perfect end to any meal. It felt like a piece of my culinary heart had been taken away.

Imagine my joy when I found a sign for El Tapatio in Wickford. At first, I wasn’t sure if it was my favorite Rhode Island Tex-Mex restaurant reborn or just another place with a familiar name. But as soon as I stepped inside and was greeted by the familiar, mouth-watering aroma of grilled meats, spices, and freshly made tortillas! The vibrant decor, the lively music, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere all confirmed it. I was in love again, ready to rediscover the flavors that had been missing from my life.

The Wickford location is a gem, featuring a very pleasant patio that offers a perfect spot for enjoying a meal outdoors. The patio is adorned with colorful umbrellas and comfortable seating, making it an ideal place to relax and savor the delicious food. Inside, the restaurant is just as inviting, with its bright, festive decor and friendly staff. It seems to be more popular than ever, with a steady stream of diners eager to experience the authentic Tex-Mex flavors that El Tapatio is known for.

I couldn’t resist ordering the sizzling beef fajitas, their aroma filling the air as they arrived at my table, still steaming and crackling on the hot skillet. Each bite was a burst of flavor, the tender beef perfectly seasoned and accompanied by all the right fixings. As I savored each mouthful, I found myself wishing I could stuff everything on the menu into my Tex-Mex-deprived mouth. It was a joyous reunion with the flavors I had missed so much.

But everyone in that neck of the woods seems to have developed a taste for Tex-Mex. The Wickford location was bustling and busy, a hive of activity with diners eager to get their fill of the delicious food. It wasn’t the cozy place that felt like you were having dinner at your Tejano best friend’s house. The food was right, but it wasn’t “home.” I still missed the Atwood location, with its intimate, familiar atmosphere and the sense of community that came with it.

Then I discovered their location on Reservoir Avenue in Cranston. This spot was quieter, cozier, and the food was just as delicious as before. It felt like a hidden gem, a place where I could once again enjoy the flavors I had missed so much.

I remember one particularly delightful meal of enchiladas—shredded beef with a rich red sauce, cheese with a tangy green tomatillo sauce, and chicken with a creamy white cheese sauce. Each enchilada was a burst of flavor, perfectly complemented by the refried beans and rice on the side. And let’s not forget the iced tea. They know how to make a good glass of iced tea, something you’ll definitely want when munching on their crispy chips with queso and salsa.

Another highlight is their chicken tortilla soup. This comforting bowl of goodness is a celebration of flavors and textures. The rich, savory broth is infused with the perfect blend of spices, creating a warm and inviting base. Tender chunks of chicken, fresh vegetables, and crispy tortilla strips add layers of texture and taste. Topped with creamy avocado slices, a sprinkle of cheese, and a hint of lime, each spoonful is a delightful mix of hearty and refreshing. It’s the kind of dish that makes you want to savor every bite, reveling in the comforting embrace of familiar flavors.

Then the little Mexican restaurant on West Shore in Warwick closed, and El Tapatio took its place. It’s right around the corner from my house. There it was… the perfect flavors, the perfect atmosphere, and the perfect location!

My taste buds found a new home!
