Westerly RI is a Player in the High End Real Estate Market
Situated on a beautiful peninsula over looking Block Island Sound, Watch Hill, an exclusive section of Westerly, Rhode Island neighboring Stonington Borough, Connecticut, has for decades hidden its gracious and majestic architecture in generations-old family retreats and "summer cottages." With a different feel from Newport, this discreet community has kept a low social profile. "Properties here have tended to stay in families for generations," says Lori Joyal, Managing Broker of the Watch Hill office of Lila Delman Real Estate. "Now that a select number of these properties are coming to market, it's like discovering a magical kingdom that has stayed hidden behind closed gates."
Watch Hill exudes a sense of privacy and pedigree, and is rich with history.
Napatree Point, at the end of the peninsula, is the westernmost point in all
Rhode Island. Originally settled by the Niantic Indians in the 1600's, European
colonists used the tip of Napatree as a strategic lookout point and military
fortification during the French, Indian and Revolutionary Wars. At the other
end of town is Misquamicut a beach community filled with glorious sandy beaches,
amusement parks, mini-golf, batting cages and fun-filled family activities.
Among the properties currently on the market is Hunter's Run, an exquisite English
manor house on 3.62 acres. This magnificent residence is set in and around a
standing grove of 30-foot white pines and blue spruce trees. Hunter's Run was
built to accommodate and take full advantage of the beautiful forest. While the
property has wonderful privacy, there is also extensive level ground suitable for
a tennis court. The roof is of a Gable design with slate covering. The stone used
in construction is quarried Rhode Island granite purchased from a mill site in
the northern part of the state. The house is of Georgian design and incorporates
numerous architecturally significant appointments.
The magnificent iron front door opens into the grand foyer where there are two
stunning marble fireplaces, one of which can be enjoyed from the Master Suite.
The home also features five glorious bedrooms, four and one-half bathrooms, a
library, and idyllic grounds. ?The 60-foot deck across the front of the home
leads to a screened porch with an outside entrance, artfully designed to capture
the beauty of the exterior of the Estate. Hunters Run radiates the essence of
Watch Hill elegance. A lovely Carriage House, Gunite Pool and spa are included
in the price of $4,350.000.
The Chateau Ste. Michelle Estate, also located in the seaside community of Watch
Hill, radiates elegance and serenity. The expansive estate encompasses a rare
4.82 parcel of land, which has an abundance of expansion possibilities including
a potential subdivision or family compound. Originally built in 1930 and
completely renovated in 1992, this estate features 14 bedrooms, 15 full baths,
5 half baths, tennis courts, in-ground pool, and glorious views. Numerous decks
overlook the waves of the Atlantic breaking on the sandy beach of Watch Hill.
The Chateau Ste. Michelle Estate overlooks the world renowned private Misquamicut
Club. It is listed at $10,900,000.
A waterfront lot of .55 acres adjacent to the Westerly Yacht Club, one of last
available in Westerly, is located near the mouth of the Pawcatuck River, which
flows into the Atlantic Ocean. This one of a kind parcel, neighboring the Westerly
Yacht Club and Marina, is 3 miles to the Village of Watch Hill, and is a rare
waterfront opportunity at $978,000.
According to Lori Joyal, "Watch Hill is poised to become the new Nantucket or
South Hampton, and is far more accessible from New York and Connecticut."
