Skip Boston's Airport – Take Rhode Island's

TF Green Airport (PVD)

By Paul Pence

From the time you park in the long-term parking so close that you can stroll to the terminal, that Rhode Island's TF Green airport is a better choice than Boston's Logan Airport. Actually, it was probably obvious during the drive to the airport, with easy uncongested interstate access, unlike Boston's freeways twisted into tight, crowded, ever-changing pretzels by their mulit-billion dollar "big dig" project. It takes less time to drive to TF Green than Logan from almost anywhere south or west of downtown Boston.

Of course you don't have to park in the stroll to the terminal. Three small busses cycle continuously and drop you off at the door closest to your check in. Or maybe you'd prefer to park in the private parking structures (garage is too limited of a term) that sit right next to the terminal. In the near future, you'll be able to catch an Amtrack or commuter train as the first leg of your trip and depart the train right at the airport.

Once you at arrive the terminal, skycaps welcome you and check your luggage. If you prefer, you can go right up to the ticketing agent, but there's little that they do that can't be done by the skycap and the attendants at the gate.

TF Green's smaller size makes it easy to get from your baggage check to your gate. Even during peak times, the security check-in is smooth and efficient. Once past security, one long windowed concourse spans gates that are used by American, US Airways, Southwest, and others. The entrance joins the uncrowded concourse in its middle, cutting your walk to the gate in half. No moving walkways or automated trains move you around -- TF Green's too small to need such things.

Every airport has its own collection of eateries, bars, gift shops and newsstands -- TF Green is no exception. Their main restaurant, the Federal Tavern, makes a noble and often successful effort to deliver food worth remembering, with an excellent onion soup or a robust serving of pasta. Their wine list is fairly limited, but those who partake won't have to go without. For people who want simpler food, even fast food, there's a small food court that concentrates on prepackaged foods and soft drinks. A TGIFriday's and a sports bar helps round out the selection.

Plentiful seating lines the sides of the concourse with a more open floor plan than most airports' cubby-hole gates. Like most airports finding a plug for a laptop computer can be difficult, but there are special booths for internet access. And if flying makes you a little tense, you may enjoy a massage at the airport's First Class Massage which will ease away your troubles as you wait for your plane.

So when would you want to take Boston's Logan airport? If you're real close to Logan, if you're going to take Boston's subway system to get there, or if you're flying to an international destination. Other than that, if you want convenience, a lack of crowds, and a comfortable safe environment, head to Rhode Island's TF Green Airport.
