A holiday tradition aimed at making it easier for people to enjoy the excitement of Providence is about to get underway. Mayor David N. Cicilline announced today that the City’s Relaxed Parking program is scheduled to begin the day after Thanksgiving on Friday, November 25 and will run through January 1, 2006.

Cars parked in illegal spaces, including cross walks and tow zones, will be ticketed during this period.

This free parking program is a part of Mayor David N. Cicilline's plan to promote Providence as a shopping desitation during the holiday season. He recently joined dozens of Providence merchants and representatives of leading city business groups to launch “Buy Providence!” – a campaign to promote sales of locally produced goods and services during this holiday season and beyond.

“With 24 shopping days to Christmas and many other wonderful holiday celebrations, we are all looking for the best, most unique gifts to give our friends and loved ones,” said the Mayor. “We don’t have to look further than our own backyard to find those terrific treasures, and we can feel great about supporting our neighbors and our local economy.”

The Mayor, who was joined by Janet W. Raymond, Senior Vice President of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, noted that the capitol city is home to thousands of small businesses and restaurants, which offer the finest quality products and services, including artwork, clothing, food, shoes, fine furniture, floral design, toys, personal amenities and more. For these merchants, the holiday trade is typically the most important time in the sales cycle. Both agreed that small business is the backbone of this city and nation’s economy, and it is important to support that will create jobs and spur economic opportunity.

To help residents and visitors find those many merchants, the Mayor announced the creation of a dynamic website link called, “Buy Providence!” on the city’s website www.providenceri.com. The site lists the nearly 1000 businesses, and the Mayor invited local businesses to contact the city if they wish to be added to the list.

“This is a website that will continue to grow and be highly visited, as people learn more about the tremendous depth and range of locally-made products and services made right here, in Providence,” the Mayor added.

“This time of year, it is incredibly easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season,” said Janet Raymond, senior vice president operations and economic development. “This initiative highlights another option for holiday shoppers while stimulating a local economy that supports the community at large.”

Dozens of merchants associations, including the Downtown Merchants Association, the Greater Providence Merchants Association, the Providence Foundation, the Federal Hill Merchants Association attended the news event held at noon on DePasquale Plaza on Federal Hill, and echoed their delight with working collaboratively to promote local business.

The campaign, Buy Providence!, is being launched in the holiday season but expected to grow in the months and years ahead, the Mayor noted.

“So, to all, I invite you to browse the gifts displayed, meet the merchants and make a commitment to Buy Providence! this holiday season and all year long,” the Mayor concluded.
