Rhode Island Roads Sample Issue

Welcome to Rhode Island Roads magazine, the online magazine of travel, life, dining, and entertainment for people who love Rhode Island. Over the last four years, we have worked hard to find the most interesting things about Rhode Island to present to you. We've dined at restaurants from the fanciest to the ones that only the regulars seem to visit. We've dug into the state's history and culture. We've enjoyed plays, concerts, and art openings. And we've shared it with our readers.

In our free sample, you'll see an actual issue of Rhode Island Roads. It's from last year at this time, but most of our articles are written in an "evergreen" manner, so you'll find most of them still interesting and valid.

Once you've had a chance to explore the magazine a little, we think you'll like the magazine so much that you'd like to get full access to the current issue and the archives. Subscribers can also add events to our calendar, put news items into our news feed, and add their own listings to our directory of Rhode Island businesses.

Strolling through Time
An Architectural Tour of Newport Doorways
By Linda Manning
The Newport Landmark Historic District has more restored homes than any other city in Colonial America. With well over two hundred period homes of the 18th century, half along the waterfront in the Point area, and the balance throughout Historic Hill. Newport showcases one of the most diverse displays of architectural doorways. Early Colonial designs line the cobblestone streets. ...

Restaurant Roundup
Revisiting Rhode Island Restaurants
By Paul Pence
Over the last four years of writing restaurant reviews for RI Roads, I've visited hundreds of restaurants and chosen about 50 of them to write about. Four years is a long time in a restaurant's life -- long enough for many of these restaurants to have changed -- sometimes for the good, sometimes not. A lot of the restaurants have taken on new ownership or vanished completely. Here's a year-end roundup of those restaurants I've revisited and want to tell you about. ...

Restoring Heroic Cannons
Saving the Pallas and Tantae Cannons
By Lt. Joe Giammarco, United Train of Artillery, Rhode Island Militia
The Rhode Island Militia, the town of Warren, and the historic recreation group Federal Blues is working to restore the historic Pallas and Tantae cannons that served our State and Country in the War for American Independence, during the Battle of Rhode Island in August, 1778. These guns, with ornate castings and engravings, remained in a place of honor at the Warren Town Hall until they were stolen in 1981. They were rediscovered in 1994 in one of Roger Williams Park's ponds, cut into pieces and with the indentifying engravings ground off. Now the groups are working together to restore the cannons to their original beauty while maintaining their historical integrity. ...

A Feast For the Twelfth Night
The Chorus of Westerly hosts a peasant's feast on the "Twelfth Day Of Christmas"

Twelfth night is an almost-forgotten part of the American Christmas Tradition. Some people might call it "Little Christmas", others "The Eppithany", and still others may call the Twelth Day Of Christmas as the traditional celebration of the arrival of the wise men from the East. Shakespeare comedy, "The Twelfth Night" tells the story of how the celebration was carried out in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Then, the Twelfth Night was the Feast of Fools when all familiar relationships are reversed, when in the courts of Europe a servant could find a bean in his cake and reign for the night as King, and, in the churches, choir boys could celebrate mass as priests. It is a night for the wearing of masks - everybody is somebody else. ...

By Jim O'Connor
You wake up out of bed one December morning, turn on the television, only to find out your favorite ski resort is being belted with 2 feet of fresh power. Up until today, the resort didn't have enough snow for you to even consider making a road trip. However, now it is time to get into the ski mood. The next step is a visit to the ski store to get new skies, boots, and clothes. ...

I Could Be Mrs. Robinson
A Review of Rumor Has It
Review By Madelyn Miller
I could be Mrs. Robinson. Not that my legs are as good as Shirley McLaine’s. But I have had an affair with someone who would be more appropriate for my daughter. I have lots in common with Jennifer Anniston. Once upon a time I had long blonde frosted hair. And at one time, we both had a crush on Brad Pitt. But now we are both older and wiser. ...

Looking Forward to 2006
Humorous Predictions For The New Year
By Joy Cagil
What will 2006 bring? As I try to foresee 2006, leaning on my educated or in reality not so educated guessing, I’ll begin with Sudoku puzzles. True, these puzzles are rooted in 2005, but one has to step back a little to get the wider view of the horizon. Anyhow, thanks to Sudoku puzzles, I bet, we’ll all learn how to count, especially the Democrats. ...

Visiting For The Long Term
Candlewood Suites
By Paul Pence
When I first took Linda to Texas to meet my family, we needed a comfortable homebase -- a place with not only a comfortable bed, but also a kitchen, laundry facilities, and room to spread out as we explored. My mother's house had only limited air conditioning, and staying with relatives always means disrupting their schedules and routines, so we looked for a conveniently located long-stay hotel. We found Candlewood Suites. ...

Emergency Power For Your Cell Phone
Sidewinder Charger
By Paul Pence
I'm an emergency preparedness person. When I travel, I make sure that I have a snow shovel in my car trunk, right next to the jumper cables and warm blanket. And candles and kitty litter and road flares and even an old cell phone, just in case. I now have a new addition to my emergency kit -- the Sidewinder Cell Phone Charger. ...

A Whistlestop Tour
By Michael Russell
New York, New York, so good, they named it twice. Corny, I know but it sums up pretty neatly, a city with something for everyone on vacation, whether a weekend break or a full two weeks. There is so much to see and do that it’s hard to pick out the top hits but here’s a selection to choose from. ...
