Winter Romance
Romance in Rhode Island Doesn't Have To Pause For Winter
By Linda Eagleson
Well, Mother Nature has let Rhode Islanders know what winter is supposed to be like in New England. Lots and lots and lots of snow and temperatures that plummet into the negative numbers while we sleep all bundled up in our nice cozy homes. I bet there are a lot of people that put their romantic encounters on hold, because it is just too cold to go out. Well, even though it is winter, there are plenty of things to do that may require a few hours outdoors, knowing that there may be a kiss or two or three or four, well, you get what I am trying to say.
What, oh, what in the world can you do in the wintertime that is romantic?
- Invite your loved one over for hot chocolate and warm muffins right from the oven. Maybe you don’t cook, so have your loved one stop for warm muffins and you can make the coffee for them.
- Then, sit in front of your fireplace and snuggle together for a bit. In case you don’t have a fireplace, you can sit in front of the oven that just baked those homemade muffins.
- Ready for some sledding? Check out your local hill, grab your sleds and snuggle up on your way down the hill. Ok, want something a little more daring? Try snow boarding while your loved one watches from the top of the hill with their cold hands wrapped around a cup of steamy hot chocolate, with marshmallows yet!
-
Ok, so your clothes are wet now and your fingers are frozen so what in the world are you supposed to do? How about checking out a local café that has a fireplace that you can sit in front of, letting your clothes dry as you snuggle. Or you can always go home and throw them in the dryer.
-
How about taking in a movie and forget the outdoors for awhile. There are some great movies playing right now at your local theaters. Or, try the Feinstein Theater in Providence for some really fantastic movies. There’s also the Cable Car Cinema where there are couches offered to sit on rather than chairs, so you can really do some snuggling then. Or, walk around the Providence Place Mall hand in hand while you take in some warmth before heading back out into the cold again.
-
Want to try some skating? You can always go to local pond, but make sure that it is safe before venturing out on the ice. In Providence, you can head towards the Fleet Skating Center. You don’t even have to bring your own skates because they have rentals. Take you sweetie around the rink a few times, holding each other close so you won’t fall down. If you happen to fall down, make sure you make a scene so your sweetie will feel bad and kiss your booboo to make it all better. If you decide that you want to be a little more adventurous, you can always head to Yawgoo Valley to try some tubing. If your sweetie is game, try one tube and smooch all the way down the hills.
-
Ok, you’re getting hungry by now. If your sweetie is a good cook, have them make you some homemade soup. Ok, maybe your sweetie doesn’t want to cook, so after skating, head on over to the many different restaurants located in Providence. My husband and I really like McCormick and Schmidt’s, especially their “snugs” so there can be lots of smooching, while you are eating, of course! Or, if you are on the road, stop at a local establishment that has a fireplace and enjoy something hot and steamy to warm you up a bit. Then, try some of the local weekly specials that are offered at these restaurants. Not too expensive but just that right amount of everything. Food, good company and a pocketful of pennies (or quarters nowadays) to play some of the machines on the way out. . When you are done, head on back to the car and make sure you open the door for your sweetie. He or she will be thrilled and I bet you will get a kiss out of that gesture!
-
Take in a local bookstore, or Borders or Barnes and Noble and see what events are happening that night. Find out what the book reviews are saying are a best seller this month, snuggle up on one of those overstuffed couches and hold the book between the two of you, while you twiddle each others toes. There are some really neat spots on Wickenden Street and Thayer Street that offer an eclectic atmosphere if you are a little more adventurous.
-
Still not tired? Well, you can check out the local area “meeting places” for young people and try a two-step or two while listening to some great bands. Or, if you tend to swing with the older crowd, there is a great place to grab a bite or two and listen to some fantastic music. It is the IYAC club, located in the Westin Hotel. There is a small cover charge, but it is well worth it as the music and atmosphere are phenomenal.
-
Ok, so you are tired now, but not enough to go to bed yet. Rent a video before heading home, buy some Jiffy Pop and head on back to your place. The two of you can pop the corn on the stove, the old fashioned way for making pop corn, then, pop in the movie and snuggle up on the couch together. Maybe you’ll see the entire movie, and maybe you won’t!
Anyway, romance can still exist in the wintertime. There is much to do to keep those embers burning.
I actually prefer winter myself where I can grab a good book and sit on the couch while my hubby is banging away at his computer. May sound a little boring, but to us, any way we can be together is romantic, and you can feel the same way too. Ya’ll just get to make that extra effort!
Walking in a winter wonderland!
