Romantic East Greenwich, RI

By Linda Eagleson

East Greenwich is located in the middle portion of the Ocean State and is sometimes called the "city of hills". You wouldn't think of East Greenwich being a romantic town, but I can vouch that it surely is. You can experience fine dining at many local restaurants, and listen to some lively music along the waterfront while sipping Long Island Ice Teas with someone special.

Our night began with a drive into town. It was a cool evening, no humidity, and our appetites were ravenous. We chatted along the drive, discussing which one of the many cusines we would try that night. My taste buds wanted Italian food, and my sweetheart wanted Chinese, so we settled midway on the globe on Indian food. We chose The Indian Club, located on East Greenwich's classic Main Street in operation since 1998.

Upon entering the restaurant, we could smell the aroma of curry. We were quickly seated by our host, and soon we treated to some Indian cuisine. He embellished our taste buds buy offering us spicey Indian sauces, with thin crispy lentil bread for dipping. The menu of items to choose from was quite extensive. Being a novice with Indian food, our waiter was kind enough to describe a few of the items, and suggested one that most "newbies" to Middle Eastern food really liked.

We both decided on some mildly spiced dinner platters with a variety of Middle Eastern favorites. Dessert being a no no for both of us, we chose coffee and a stroll down Main Street after dinner.

Arm and arm, we noticed quaint houses and even an old Victorian hotel along the main stretch of road. Exquisite interior design window displays caught my attention immediately. Antique stores, boutiques with designer clothings, fashionable hair salons and even a cobbler made up many of the stores we admired. Some unique cafes, with tiny tables, exquisite coffees and delicate pastries were among my favorites.

We passed the Grille on Main Street with its open windows, complete with table, chairs, and jubilant customers enjoying a night on the town. Across from the Grille on Main was another famous restaurant, The Post Office converted from an actual post office into a fine dining affair, complete with its dim lighting and exquisite decor -- anyone would certainly feel very romantic there.

The walk along the Main Street was about to come to an end, as we traveled along both sides of the road. We decided we would like to visit the waterfront and sip Long Island iced teas, while listening to some jazz bands. The Harbourside Restaurant is still a famous meeting place for many singles, but we also noticed many couples enjoying themselves, also. Music came from the outside canopy area, playing a jazzy tune from the past. Gorgeous yachts swayed in the calm waters of the bay, while on lookers watched in envy.

Further down the waterfront was Twenty Water Street, another favorite for singles and couples. Scantily clad females and tanned muscular men milled around the restaurant. A blues band played in the background while hips swayed to the rhythm of the horns.

The night air was filed with excitement, with starry skies, clear crisp air. Though we loved each others company and both longed for the clock to be turned back a few hours, we decided reluctantly that we needed to get home to sleep. We consoled ourselves that it wouldn't be long until we

would return to the serene settings of Main Street, and topped off with a dynamite night of thigh slapping music on the waterfront.

Try the picturesque town of East Greenwich for a romantic night on the town. You won't be disappointed.
