Old Fashioned Romance in Bristol, RI

By Linda Eagleson

Bristol, an old sailing community with a flare for the daring at times. Daring, as in one of the most romantic places in Rhode Island, if you asked me! Imagine the sweet beginnings of a romance, as you stroll around the historic city of Bristol. Historic, as in old mansions, antique shops and restaurants. For me, a romantic day in Bristol would involve a day filled with excitement, adventures, and a little romance on the side and topped off with a sweet “treat” before returning home.

Google
Here is a list of the 10 most romantic things to do while in Bristol:

  1. Start your day around sunrise, with a bike ride along the East bay pike path, and get to know your sweetie. Also, take in the breath taking scenery along the seashore as you peddle your way along the path.
  2. Enjoy a breakfast picnic at Colt State Park, or stroll through the majestic park, which was once upon a time a farm.
  3. Take a leisurely walk through the beautiful gardens at the Blithewold Mansion, and peek at the luxurious English décor inside.
  4. How about a quick cup of decadent flavored coffees or exotic chai at the Café la France, while relaxing those tired legs?
  5. Travel a little further down Hope Street, and stop to look at the beautiful nesting grounds of native wildlife, while holding hands with your sweetie.
  6. Next, stop for a delicious meal at Tweet Balzano's for lunch, specializing in Italian pasta dishes ordered by the pound, or seafood of choice.
  7. How about this one, a stroll through the Haffenreffer museum? Yes a museum with your loved one, especially when they have the same interests as you. If museums are not your “cup of tea” then enjoy the beautifully landscaped gardens surrounding the museum, complete with a view of the ocean.
  8. After your historic diversion, try Bobbitt House Antiques, where one can experience the sense of an old English village, and maybe find a “gemstone” or two while you’re at it.
  9. For fine dining, you might want to try the Lobster Pot, complete with the elegance of mood lighting and flavored with the salty aromas of the ocean. Speaking of the ocean, the view is spectacular, especially if you are there around dusk to witness some of the most vivid sunsets in the state.
  10. Last but not least, try Sweet Occasions that offers mouth-watering confections that melt with every bite. Feed your sweetie one of these confections, and she/he might be around for a long time.

Yes, Bristol is historical, adventurous and even mystical with the stylish old mansions that probably hold many a tale of wild frolics for English sea goers. And, much more romantic than you would have imagined. But to live this experience, you need to visit!

So grab that special someone and make a day in Bristol complete with a spectacular sunset at just about every ocean view. You truly will be glad you did!
