Roger Williams Park Zoo’s Affordable, Unique Camp Experience for Kids

Enrollment begins on Saturday, January 21

Registration for ZooCamp at Roger Williams Park Zoo opens at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 21st on the Zoo’s website, ZooCamp is an environmental day camp that’s a unique option for parents who want to have a “happy camper” during winter, spring and summer break.

Winter ZooCamp runs during Rhode Island’s public school vacation week, February 21-24. The camp is open to children age four through fifth grade, and offers environmentally-themed activities, crafts, animal encounters and Zoo tours. The deadline to register for the winter session is February 13.

“ZooCamp has typically been one of our most popular programs, probably because parents appreciate the fact that it has incredible educational value for their children while also being a lot of fun,” said Shareen Knowlton, director of education for the Zoo. “It’s also a great value for the money; with our low and competitive prices, ZooCamp programs are more affordable than many other comparable camps and daycares in the area.”

Winter ZooCamp is comprised of two different themed camps, each tailored to a specific age range.

Tadpole Academy is a half-day camp (morning session: 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., afternoon session: 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.) where four and five year olds can have fun exploring our wild world through age appropriate stories, crafts, games and Zoo exploration, in a small group of only ten campers per session. This year’s theme is “Animals in Winter.” Campers will discover some of the ways animals survive the cold winters, from furry coats to long journeys.

Kids in first through fifth grade can enroll in Winter Adventures, a full day camp that offers a variety of activities and adventures at the Zoo that are just right for “big kids.” This year’s theme is “Around the Zoo in 4 Days,” campers will take a trip around the world as they explore the animals and exhibit areas of Roger Williams Park Zoo. New for 2012: daily registration options are available for the Winter Adventures ZooCamp. Children in first – fifth grades can be registered for one, two, three or all 4 days of the camp.

Winter ZooCamp fees vary depending on the particular camp program, but range from $115- $165 for Zoo members and $140 – $190 for non-members. The deadline to register is one week prior to the desired week of camp, but there are a limited number of spots available per week, and enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration for all ZooCamps (winter, spring & summer) starts January 21 on the zoo’s website.
