Crazy Burger, Narragansett, RI
By Paul Pence
If the unusual artistic decor didn't clue you in on the reason for Crazy Burger's name, the menu certainly will. "Freaky Fajita Burger": chicken, avocado, salsa, and sour cream in a flour tortilla. "Ima B. Vegan Burger" made from soy, not beef, and with peppers, spinach, quinoa, curry, and mango chutney on a pita. A little bit of searching among the uniquely named and inventively constructed "burgers" will eventually reveal foods for the somewhat less adventurous. Their "Goofy Gorgonzola Burger" made with beef, caramelized onions and gorgonzola cheese served on a bun, for instance, or their "Half-Crazed Burger" which is a half pound of beef on their house bun.
Their menu is rounded out by soups, salads, and wood grilled pizzas at night and breakfast items in the morning. In the morning, the more mundane can enjoy their eggs and homefries and pancakes. But thrill seakers can dive into omelets made with a long list of unexpected ingredients like sweet potatoes, artichoke hearts, and grilled eggplant. And at all times of the day, their juice bar will make exciting shakes, smoothies, and juices to keep your tongue guessing.
Oh oh oh oh. I forgot to mention the desserts! I'm usually too stuffed to think about their desserts after I gorge on their home-made fries and everything else they offer, but their desserts keep up with the rest of their menu. The chocolate chip split, for instance, is ice cream piled on top of a soft chocolate chip cookie, with bananas, and drizzled with caramel sauce. After you've seen one of their desserts, you'll promise yourself to make room for it.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that Crazy Burger is a fast food place to take your kiddies and have them order happy meals from a plastic clown. They're casual with the feel of a cozy sixties coffee house. Some of the art on the wall seems to date from that period, despite opening up in Narragansett just seven years ago. They regularly rotate the rest of the art, displaying local artists' work above the wooden booths. At night, they turn on the dangling Christmas lights and paper lanterns, while votives light the booths. And not a plastic fork or paper napkin in sight, day or night.
The food, service, and atmosphere all support a very high recommendation with small demerits for poor handicap accessibility and no fresh iced tea in the winter. Prices are moderate. The wait during prime time can be as much as half an hour. They're open 8AM to 9:30PM most days, with 10PM closings on Friday and Saturday, and closing early on Sunday at 4PM.
Crazy Burger can be found at 144 Boon Street, Narragansett. Easiest way to find it is to find the seawall on Ocean Road near the casino, cut inland on Rodman Street two blocks to Boon Street, then south a block and a half. Their phone is 783-1810.
