Reflections at Silver Spring Lake

I watch the ice form a blanket
over the lake, the bitter cold
devouring the water
like the unexplainable jealousy
that eats my heart. That layer
of ice looks so strong,
so stable, yet I know it is not,
for the reality of many things
lie hidden beneath a mirage
of strength, of power, and
confidence. And just like my heart,
the ice is not as strong as it seems.
I place one foot in front of the other,
testing, and the ice shatters.
