Very Much January

That creeping optimist nymph. Sometimes her laugh is like a crackling bootleg recording of a concert.
When her mind comes unplugged and I have all of her grouped loosely on my couch she rambles
about a roundabout love affair with an enigma. It's almost like a tabloid ghost story, the way she tells it,
everything a little bit too exposed. Taking cold showers of hard water only seems to bother her on the
weekends, when she has time to think about things like temperature. Long winter, she says, wishing
for thunderclouds and palm trees. A trip to some Middle Eastern-colored apartment building in a warmer state,
with all of the travel arrangements taken care of. I'll never really be specific, but I will say that some
things are worth it, like when she whispers, but only if you promise to kiss me like that. It allows me to believe,
if only for a few moments, that she wants to stay here with me.
