The hungry hermit
hunts a scarf of shore,
studious eyes open,
wings closed still
on the blue shadow.
Stanchioned tall
on spindly legs
his slow staccato gait
stands unflapped
by the lapping shallows.
At a splosh he hesitates,
one leg high-
hinged in dusky air.
Unfolding,
a muddy foot turns,
the grey ark sweeps
his diving beak
nabbing a bit of silver
napping in the cattails.
