Fox
She moves like lightning
crossing the road, positions
her three kits in a dense
bush and dashes noisily
off to keep our eyes on
her moving. No time
cautioning the kids
to close their eyes, she
must not be mindful
in the staggering
fright, thinks maybe
location is her wild
card, that her galloping
racket over the crusty
leaves in the Kingstown
woods will freeze us
in her direction. She
doesn't count on the
liquid flashlight gleam
in their six small eyes.
Riveted on us, they are.
