Mixed Magic Presents A New Adaptation Of Frankenstein
Misery’s Fiend: Frankenstein is adapted by Mixed Magic Theatre’s Artistic Director Ricardo Pitts-Wiley from Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus, a novel written by the British author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley.
Shelley started writing Frankenstein when she was 18 and finished when she was 19. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. The title of the novel refers to a scientist, Victor, who learns how to create life. He creates a being in the likeness of man, but larger than average and more powerful. The story has had an influence across literature and popular culture and spawned a complete genre of horror stories and films. It is often considered the first fully realized science fiction novel due to its pointed, if gruesome, focus on playing God by creating life from dead flesh. In Ricardo Pitts-Wiley’s adapation, the play is set on a modern exploration ship locked in the ice of the Artic Sea. Victor Frankenstein and his murderous Creature have been marooned on the ice flows for centuries waiting over and over again to be rescued. Capt. Walton (Jason Quinn) and his crew bring Victor Frankenstein (Jim Brown) aboard and unwittingly, the Creature also. Three actors (Jeannie Carson, Tammy Brown and Jay Chattelle) portray The Creature. Against a backdrop of fictional and real monsters Mary Shelley’s great novel again unfolds. Misery’s Fiend: Frankenstein, is directed by Yale Alumnus Jonathan Pitts-Wiley who also directed last season’s The Spirit Warrior’s Dream and The Tempest. The cast also includes Bill Pett as Victor’s father, Desiree Babbitt as Undertaker’s Wife and the Magistrate, Sarah Pierce as Agatha, and the wrongfully accused Justine, Gregory Johnson as Felix, Jim Webster as the Old Man and Rudy Cabrera as Clerval.
