Urinetown

A Musical By Mark Hollmann & Greg Kotis Angell Blackfriars Theatre, Smith Center For The Arts

Providence College’s Department of Theatre, Dance and Film presents Urinetown by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis, directed by Professor Mary G. Farrell.

The winner of three Tony awards, Urinetown imagines what would happen if “It’s a Privilege to Pee,” as one of the songs explains. Due to a twenty-year drought, the Urine Good Company monitors the use of public toilets and the poor are forced to pay drastic amounts to use them. A musical filled with comedy, murder, and rebellion that “follows only one rule: expect the unexpected. You’ve never experienced anything quite like it.”- Rex Reed, New York Observer.

Musical direction is by Lila Kane, whose recent work includes musical direction for a staged reading of The Scarlet Letter, a musical adaptation at Rhode Island College, as well as musical direction this past November for the University of Rhode Island’s Oklahoma! Costumes are designed by resident artist David Costa-Cabral, Professor in the Department of Theatre, Dance and Film. Tim Cryan and Katryne Hecht will join Providence College again as Lighting Designer and Scenic Designer, respectively, having designed for the college’s recent production of Waiting for Lefty. Urinetown will be performed the weekends of April 3rd and April 17th, with a break for Easter Recess the weekend of April 10th.

The Box Office for the Smith Center is located at the main entrance of the building and is now open for ticket sales. Box Office hours are Monday through Friday, 1:30 to 5:00 PM, and 1 hour prior to performances. The Box Office will be closed for school break March 9th- March 13th. Tickets may also be purchased over the phone with a credit card by calling 401-865-2218. Ticket prices are $11.00, $8.00 (senior citizen) and $5.00 (student).
