RI Outdoors First Annual Scholarship Party To Be Held On Opening Day Of The Show Newport-based IYRS—which offers full- and part-time programs in yacht restoration—was selected as a nonprofit partner for the role the school plays in training skilled individuals for jobs in the marine sector. The restoration and woodworking skills taught at IYRS are highly valued by today’s boatyards. In 2004, IYRS expanded its part-time course offerings so boatyard employees who could not enroll on a full-time basis could study at IYRS. “We are honored to have been chosen as the show’s nonprofit partner,” said IYRS President Terry Nathan. “The event will not only help IYRS and its students, but the boating industry as a whole. The funds raised will help us create more opportunities for students who want to come to IYRS—students who will someday become valuable employees at marine businesses.” The Scholarship Party runs from 6 pm to 9 pm, on September 15, on the grounds of the Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina (49 America’s Cup Avenue). The festive evening will feature a cocktail reception and live music and dancing. Party tickets are $50 per person; the price of a ticket includes a complimentary ticket to the boat show that can be used any day of the show. Leaders in the marine industry have lent their support to the event by serving on the school’s 17-member volunteer Scholarship Committee, chaired by IYRS Trustee Glenn C. Mallory. Among the committee members are: Charles Dana, president of Newport Shipyard (Newport, R.I.), Gerry DiSchino, president of Hinckley Yacht Services (Portsmouth, R.I.), Tom Rich of New England Boatworks (Portsmouth, R.I.), and Grant Westerson, executive director of the Connecticut Marine Trades Association. Founded in 1993, IYRS offers a two-year accredited program for full-time students in yacht restoration and a program of part-time Continuing Education. The school’s 2.5-acre waterfront campus on Newport’s Thames Street includes the 1831 Mill Building, slated for restoration to accommodate a growing demand for IYRS programs, and the 1905 Restoration Hall, which serves as workshop and gallery space. IYRS is currently restoring the 133' 1885 schooner yacht Coronet, the first Rhode Island vessel named to the National Register of Historic Places. The 35th Annual Newport International Boat Show will feature new sailboats and powerboats, and thousands of products and services from domestic and international exhibitors.
