Wanted: Preservation Month Activities

National On-Line Calendar Highlights 2005 Preservation Month Celebrations Across The Country

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is currently seeking submissions to its national on-line Preservation Month Calendar of Events from organizations and individuals hosting events and activities to celebrate Preservation Month in May. The on-line calendar is organized by state and serves as a tool to promote national preservation efforts during Preservation Month.

Since the National Trust created Preservation Week in 1971 to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts around the country, it has grown into an annual celebration observed by small towns and big cities with events ranging from architectural and historic tours and award ceremonies, to fundraising events, educational programs and heritage travel opportunities.

Due to its overwhelming popularity, the National Trust has extended the celebration to the entire month of May and declared it Preservation Month to provide an even longer opportunity to celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our country’s cities and states and enable more Americans to become involved in the growing preservation movement. This year will mark the first official Preservation Month.

The theme for Preservation Month 2005 corresponds with the theme of the 2004 National Preservation Conference, “Restore America: Communities at a Crossroads.” Throughout the month of May, the National Trust and its thousands of partners across the country will focus on four areas of the preservation movement: preservation at home, heritage travel, heritage education, and the diversity of preservation. To learn more about these topics, or to view or submit activities, events, and celebrations to the on-line calendar, please visit the National Trust’s website, www.nationaltrust.org, email PreservationMonth@nthp.org, or call 202-588-6141.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to protecting the irreplaceable. Recipient of the National Humanities Medal, the Trust was founded in 1949 and provides leadership, education and advocacy to save America’s diverse historic places and revitalize communities. Its Washington, DC headquarters staff, six regional offices and 25 historic sites work with the Trust’s 200,000 members and thousands of local community groups in all 50 states.
