Events Are Underway For A Yearlong Celebration!
Provender kicked-off the yearlong festivities in November with a Thanksgiving triple pie giveaway, followed by a chocolate buffet in December with Providence’s own internationally acclaimed Garrison Confections. Plans are underway for March when the store and café reopen. Provender closes January and February for its usual period of R&R, which proprietor, Jennifer Borden, uses to whip up new edible creations and plan ahead for another busy year greeting loyal customers. Borden purchased Provender Fine Foods 15 years ago from Cindy Burns, the original owner, who established the business as one of quality and innovation 25 years ago. The tradition continues as Borden and her creative baking partner, Donna Macomber, serve epicureans who come from around the corner and around the world to enjoy the ambiance of a charming historic building and a gourmet menu. “Our commitment to quality, freshness and creativity is key to our success and customer satisfaction,” said Borden. “We really don’t cut corners. Nothing is scooped from containers. We stay ahead of the culinary curve to offer a varied menu not available elsewhere.” Borden and Macomber combine their culinary talents and love of fresh, quality ingredients to create homemade sandwiches, condiments and desserts daily in their small, efficient kitchen in back of the store. Up with the sun, the women mix, bake, chop and puree for hours before their customers line up for morning scones and muffins with their coffee, and later in the day for hearty sandwiches and other savories. Neither woman has been professionally trained, but learned her craft from either past restaurant kitchen experience or cooking as a child with a beloved grandmother. Borden ran the Provender catering services back in the early eighties until she left to work at a nearby restaurant. She returned a few years later in 1989 and bought the establishment the following year. Named Best Cookie and Best Veggie Sandwich 2000 by Rhode Island Monthly, Provender’s Chocolate Orange cookie, Scarlet Letter sandwich and Lemon Buttermilk cake continue to be favorites. A new addition of soaps, scented with cookie flavors, is also available for those who can’t get enough of warm cookie aromas! Bon appetit! Winter Hours- Provender Fine Foods will take its annual hiatus in the months of January and February as it prepares to enter 2005 with celebratory events throughout the New Year.
