Pig Iron Theatre Company has created in this work a vibrant, buoyant, exuberant, and even whimsical rock opera, steeped in vaudeville, dada, and hard-hitting rock-n-roll.
Called, “Dark, funny, and moving,” by author Toni Morrison, James Joyce is Dead. . . is performed in an unpredictable, cabaret/confessional style that keeps its audience entertained, enthralled, and on edge. Pig Iron tells Lucia’s story with well-placed words, vaudevillian razor-sharp timing, and electrified sound. Solidly backed-up by a band of certifiable lunatics, Lucia goes from smooth rock-n-roll punk-diva to jaded chantreuse in the blink of an eye. James Joyce is Dead. . . was nominated for 4 Barrymore Awards, including Best Original Music, Best Ensemble, and Best New Play.
Founded in 1995, Pig Iron Theatre Company has rapidly become known internationally, and stateside, for their innovative voice in theatre. Their work is physically precise, and experimental, while at the same time remaining accessible. Over the past 10 years, Pig Iron has created over 15 original productions, including Shut Eye, a collaboration with the late director, and member of the Open Theatre, Joseph Chaikin. Most recently, The New York Times hailed the latest Pig Iron creation, Hell Meets Henry Halfway (adapted by Adriano Shaplin of the politically edgy Riot Group, from the 1939 novel by author Witold Gromobrowicz) as, “Absurd, unbalancing and exhilarating.” Pig Iron never fails to reinvent themselves, drawing from a variety of theatrcal traditions to create their own interdisciplinary art form.
Pig Iron Theatre Company has toured throughout the U.S. as well as to festivals and theaters in England, Scotland, Poland, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, Romania and Germany. Co-founders and Artistic Directors Quinn Bauriedel, Dan Rothenberg, and Dito van Reigersberg were recipients of a Pew Fellowship in the Arts. Pig Iron has also received three grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information, visit www.pigiron.org
