Q: WHAT WILL BE HACKED, CHISELED, IRONED, STYLED & BLOW-DRIED ON FEB. 18 AT BOWEN’S WHARF? A: OVER 9,000 POUNDS OF SOLID ICE!

On Friday, February 18 in downtown Newport, RI, Bowen’s Wharf kicks off the Newport Winter Festival. Ice sculptors from the Maine Snow and Ice Sculpting Foundation will work their magic on 9,000 pounds of solid ice creating a sculpture in keeping with the Newport Winter Festival theme, "Rock Away the Winter Blues".

The Bowen’s Wharf Ice Sculpting Demonstration will be stationed under a tent near the flagpole on America’s Cup Avenue. Four members of the Maine Snow and Ice Sculpting Foundation will work from 10 a.m. until approximately 6 p.m. In keeping with the festival theme, in honor of the 50th anniversary of rock & roll, recorded 50’s music will play throughout the day and rumor has it there may be an Elvis sighting.

The Maine Snow and Ice Sculpting Foundation is led by Mr. Ed Jarrett, president of the non-profit organization and the founder of Maine WinterFest, the largest winter festival in Maine celebrating snow and ice sculpting. Mr. Jarrett has several ice carving trophies and awards including several first places from Newport Winter Festival Ice Sculpting Contests. Mr. Jarrett states, "The ice carvers I am bringing to Bowen’s Wharf are Southern Maine Community College students and local chefs. We’re looking forward to wielding our chisels, chain saws, power sanders, blow dryers and tools and getting to work."

Not only does Mr. Jarrett win awards sculpting ice, he also was lead sculptor in creating the Guinness World Records’ tallest sandcastle in Falmouth, Maine. (The height beat the former record in Finland by 4 inches topping out at 29 ft. 3 in.utilizing 900,000 pounds of hand packed sand.)

Bart Dunbar, President of Bowen’s Wharf Company, stated, "Bowen’s Wharf is thrilled to bring such talented sculptors to Newport for a demonstration to kick off this year’s Newport Winter Festival. Ed Jarrett has wonderful vision and technique. It should prove to be a stunning work and a fun event for the whole family."

Spectators are welcome to enjoy the ice carving demonstration and music, as well as view the Bowen’s Wharf merchants’ windows decorated in the Newport Winter Festival theme. February 18 also marks the beginning of Bowen’s Wharf Green Flag Sale Days which are held in conjunction with the Newport Winter Festival through February 27. Bowen’s Wharf merchants hang green sale flags outside their establishments signifying their participation in the sale.
