The Space At Alice Presents: From Here To There

Artists: Jen Corace And Matt Tracy

Beginning January 20th, THE SPACE AT ALICE is pleased to present From Here to There, an exhibition of new works by Providence-based artists Jen Corace and Matt Tracy which draw connections between art, geography, and personal experience.

In their series of paintings and mixed media images, Corace and Tracy play on the form and intentions of basic maps, weaving in reference to the individual history that lies behind a pictorial mapping of any location where lives unfold.

Jen Corace revisits her youth in Devonshire Village, an area in southern New Jersey that Corace associates with the dull and repetitive development scheme of classic suburbia. Yet the artist also sees the map representation of her old neighborhood as the base-layer for her memories, and for the projected path she assumed her life would take in the suburban landscape. Corace explains, “I am at heart an illustrator, so a sense of story is important to me. I have all these bits of information I would like to organize in order to create a story board of sorts for myself. The best way to create this system of organization is through maps.” The paintings included in this exhibition will be the first works in a larger project that Corace hopes will form a personal-spatial chronology of her experiences and growth.

Matt Tracy’s work also addresses the limitless possibilities of maps and direction. In these mixed-media pieces made with collage, acrylic transfer, ink, and paint, Tracy says he intends to “examine the tattered edges where written language crackles against geography and architecture.” His work speaks to the process of translating the perceptions and ideas that spring from a specific physical space back into an instructive map. By layering experience with information, Tracy expands the notion of two-dimensional spatial representation into a living and breathing, human interaction with various surroundings.

In From Here to There, Jen Corace and Matt Tracy draw memory, language, and dynamic events into map-based interpretations of their respective environments. Taken together, these works examine the relationship between human experience, the boundless representative possibilities of art, and the difficulty of conveying the true essence of a place in a concise and informative outline.
