Mr. Fazioli stated, "The City is extremely pleased by the generosity of the Champlin Foundations, the walkway will enhance the experience of visitors of the Turner Reservoir Loop Trail, providing a unique outdoor recreation facility". For the last two years, the City has been making improvements to the existing Turner Reservoir Loop Trail along with the assistance of the East Providence/Seekonk Rotary Club, Department of Environmental Management, and a local Boy Scout Troop located in Seekonk, Massachusetts as an Eagle Scout Project. The loop trail begins at Pleasant Street, heads north along the eastern bank of the Turner Reservoir, west along Newman Avenue, south along Arcade Street, south along the western bank of the Reservoir, and south along ledge road. A segment of the trail, southeast of the Turner Reservoir dam, approximately the last quarter mile of the loop trail, consists of an extensive wetland that forces the trail to detour onto Ledge Road rather than follow the desired route along the Ten Mile River. The City intends to construct a raised walkway with amenities as observation decks, built in benches, and interpretive signage. It is expected that the walkway, with observation areas raised above the shoreline of the Ten Mile River, will offer a tremendous viewing point to observe the spring fish runs of shad and herring. Construction is expected to begin Spring 2005, with completion expected by Fall 2005. |
