The Mayor received an honorary black belt, as the city’s chief executive officer, and he witnessed the presentation of this award by the Olympian Master coach Najem. The Black Belt recipients range in age from 7-years to 62-years old, come from the greater Providence area and include: Christopher Wilson, Max Bready, Raymond Loulache, Stephen Cipolla, Sasha Kopmocar, Stephen Anderson, Zoe Maine, Paula Charleson, Mark Charleson, Silas Pinto, Carmelina Pontarelli, Asya Cabral, Justin Hare, Firmino Henriques, John Zuromski, Fernando Fialho, and Carlos De la Cruz. The Black Belt is the highest award earned in the sport of Tae Kwon Do, and requires years of training and testing. Najem is a former Olympian Champion (1992-Barcelona) and 2-time Olympian competitor, 2-time World Champion, 4-time Pan American, and 10-time National Champion from Canada. Najem opened his academy in Cransotn nearly 4 years ago, and has invited his Olympian competitor & gold medallist – Willaim Gordova of Mexico, and Grand Master Min of Korea and Canada to help in the testing this weekend. Tae Kwon Do is an ancient practice of self-defense dating back 2000 years, and is a philosophy of balancing mind and body and the world around us.
