Hip-Hop And Spoken Word Live Competition On January 24th At Trinity Rep
This free, live event will be held onstage at Trinity Rep, 201 Washington Street in Downtown Providence at 7:00PM and open to the public. The “Who Is Providence’s Topdog?” competition will be hosted and judged by HOT 106 on-air personalities, and the cast of Trinity Rep’s Topdog/Underdog. The inspiration for the contest came from Trinity Rep’s current production of Topdog/Underdog, Suzan-Lori Parks' Pulitzer Prize-winning play that starred Mos Def on Broadway and turned the theater world on its ear. This passionate story of sibling rivalry features dialogue that soars with the intensity of poetry, and crackles with the compelling rhythm of the street hustle. Topdog/Underdog is now playing through February 13th at Trinity Rep, for tickets call 401-351-4242 or online at www.trinityrep.com. Local talent (ages 16 and up) who want to compete for the title of “Providence’s Topdog” in rap and spoken word are invited to pre-register with HOT 106 for a spot in the live competition. Competition rules state that each poem must be of the performer’s own construction and profanity-free; under three minutes long and performed without props, instruments, or costumes. For more information or to sign-up, contact HOT 106 by phone at 401-433-4200 ext 176 or by email at Patrick@hot1063.com. Twenty entrants will be selected as participants in the “Who Is Providence’s Topdog?” hip-hop and spoken word competition. They will perform live on Monday January 24th at 7PM on the set of Topdog/Underdog at Trinity Rep and will be judged both on the basis of content as well as overall performance. The winner of this event will receive a “Night On the Town” prize package that includes: limo ride, a trophy crowning them “Providence’s Topdog,” a HOT 106 prize pack and tickets to the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Topdog/Underdog, now playing at Trinity Rep through February 13th. Additional prizes will be awarded to runners up in the competition as well.
