Rhode Island Roads magazine is feature-oriented; we prefer timeless articles that remain interesting to our readers long after the story was printed. But sometimes we find news items that we JUST HAVE TO present to you.

Here is the news at the top of the list:

Education: Annenberg Institute Receives $3m Grant
The Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University has been awarded nearly $3 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help school districts improve high school graduation rates and college and career readiness. The funds will be used to support development of “College Readiness Indicator Systems” (CRIS) that schools can use to identify students in danger of dropping out or graduating from high school unprepared for a postsecondary job or education.

Arts/Culture: A Month Of Peace
The Peace Art Project is a month-long celebration of a peace in Providence. It represents the collaboration of five prominent organizations and the support of many additional community organizations and individuals to encourage nonviolence and peace in our community. Among the participants in the partnership are Steven Pennell of the URI Feinstein Providence Campus Urban Arts and Culture Program, Rebecca Siemering of Providence Art Windows, Jodi Glass of the RI Commission on Prejudice and Bias, Ginny Fox of the Peace Flag Project, and Deanna Camputaro of the Arts, Communication, and Teaching Academy of Central Falls High School, a URI Academy Public School and the Rhode Island for Community and Justice.

Education: Sustainability
The University of Rhode Island’s Ocean State Clean Cities Coalition will host a Sustainable Biodiesel Workshop on Sept. 8 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. to share insights and success stories about the use of biodiesel as a clean transportation fuel alternative.

Entertainment: Deadliest Catch In Providence
Captain Sig and the Hillstrand Brothers from Discovery Channel’s hit documentary series Deadliest Catch will make a rare appearance at the Providence Performing Arts Center on Friday, September 10 at 8P. Tickets for DEADLIEST CATCH LIVE! go on sale at www.ppacri.org on Tuesday, June 29 at 6P.
