A Home Base for Your Boat
Why I love Apponaug Harbor Marina
By George Boase
At one time or another, I think most of us have considered a waterfront home so we could have our boats close to us. Nothing says, “I’ve got mine” like having your boat at home. There’s also the convenience factor. If the weather and urge strikes, and you feel like a sail/cruise after a day’s work, just untie and off you go. There’s no travel time, schlepping supplies down to the marina, loading and unloading, and all the other bothersome tasks.

Shrines, Icons, and Spirits
The art of Bob Rizzo at the Newport Art Museum
By Gayle Hargreaves
If you travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo today you will still see, as in centuries past, strange figures made of wood, feathers, cloth, nails and other common objects at the entrances to villages and homes. Intended to control and direct ambivalent spirits, these M’kissi or spirit figures are just one source of inspiration for artist, collector, curator and arts advocate Bob Rizzo. A long-time presence on the arts scene in Providence, Rizzo’s own artwork is the subject of a new exhibition at the Newport Art Museum. “Bob Rizzo: Shrines, Icons and Spirits” opens on running through September 7, 2008.

Evidence is mounting that dietary changes may help children control their Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder at least as well as Ritalin does. Evidence also shows that some dietary changes - like increased Omega-3 consumption - can also enhance learning skills in children who do not have ADHD.

Hiking has become quite a sport for many Rhode Islanders, my family included. Recently, we traveled to Ryan Park, located in the artsy town of Wickford, RI. At this time of year, the Department of Environmental Management's Division of Fish and Wildlife receives many calls from people asking what to do with young birds and mammals that have been found alone, appearing to be orphans. Tricia Cline (Woodstock, Vermont), Deborah Muirhead (Storrs, Connecticut), Jane Rosen (San Gregorio, California) and Suzanne Volmer (Lincoln, Rhode Island) are clearly geographically diverse and they were not acquainted prior to this exhibition. But there is never the less a pronounced kinship of creative process, a like-minded endeavor about their projects. Judith Tolnick Champa, Exhibition Curator, identifies that special kinship in this exhibition she calls "Speaking Volumes."

Valet Parking
Auto theft with permission?
I’d like to address the issue of valet parking because, quite frankly, I think it’s the worst system in the world. If I was still on that library kick, I’d add that Dewey Decimal — if that is his real name — would be laughing in his grave. Now I understand that this is a “fancy” way to park because someone is doing the parking for you, and anytime someone does something for you, it’s automatically fancy. The same ideology is what makes room service more than just expensive food.

Vermont is a bit of a drive for a Rhode Islander -- after all, there are plenty of Rhode Islanders who hate even driving over "THE BRIDGE", and who consider Emerald Square Mall too far away because it's off the edge of the state. But a drive to Vermont gets you into the Green Moutains, away from any hint of city life, and into the realm of ski resorts...
