Flower Power

Celebrate "The Pleasures of Summer" at the Newport Flower Show

Newport's Rosecliff Mansion

Beach cabanas, sailboats, tennis, polo, jazz—all hallmarks of a typical carefree summer in Newport—will help to define the Newport Flower Show at Rosecliff June 23-25, 2006, as the show celebrates the pleasures of a Newport summer in its 11th year. Opening day visitors will be able to enjoy a special "Bring a Friend" offer---two admissions for just $20. A new outdoor Garden Design division adds to the fun, along with an expanded children's program, informative lectures and workshops, scrumptious lunches in an Oceanside Café, and fantastic shopping in the elegant Garden Marketplace.

Also among the weekend festivities are the opening night cocktail party and dinner at Rosecliff, the elegant Olmsted Benefactor Evening dinner at The Elms, and a Lecture and Luncheon on the Lawn with special guest Barbara King.

Also new this year is the advent of the Newport Flower Show International Achievement Award, honoring individual commitment to the preservation of landscapes and the environment, continuing inspiration in the art of garden design, and dedication to advancing the field of horticulture. The award will be presented to Prince Louis-Albert de Broglie, a Parisian prince who left the world of banking for a chateau in France's Loire Valley and discovered a talent for gardening, earning the moniker "Le Prince Jardinier." His is an unlikely fairy tale that starts with a 16th century castle and ends with a luxury hotel, over 500 varieties of old, rare and newly-discovered tomatoes, and a company that designs, produces and sells gardening products fit for a king. The prince will be a special guest at the Flower Show all weekend, and will receive his award during the Olmsted Benefactor Evening dinner on June 24.

The Flower Show will open to the public at noon on Friday, June 23. Regular show admission is $13 per person in advance, $15 at the door. Show hours on Saturday and Sunday will be 9 am to 5 pm.

Newport's Rosecliff Mansion On Friday evening, guests can enjoy opening night "Cocktails on the Lawn", a festive garden party that has become a Newport tradition. The evening will include scrumptious food provided by local restaurants and caterers, music and shopping. Tickets for Cocktails on the Lawn are $125 per person; $100 for Preservation Society members.

Renowned floral designer Barbara King of Pennsylvania's Valley Forge Flowers will be the keynote speaker at a special Lecture and Luncheon on the Lawn on Saturday, June 24. A third generation floral designer, she will share her experiences and demonstrate how to make the perfect arrangement for the perfect party.
