Newport Art Museum Summer Camps

Variety and value are the key benefits of signing up for a Newport Art Museum summer youth workshop, art camp or class according to the museum’s Director of Education, Judy Hambleton. Hambleton and her staff are now registering children and teens for summer programs offered at the museum and at the Tiverton Four Corners Art Center. Weekly sessions and two-day workshops for young people ages 4 through 14 begin in mid-June and run through August 24th in Newport; early July through August 10h in Tiverton Four Corners.

Every week is different and children will use a variety of materials and techniques to explore themes ranging from flower power, puppets and pirates to underwater creatures, safaris and the Seven Wonders of the World. Older youth have plenty to choose from too and those with a serious interest in art can sign up for intensive sessions in studio art and photography. Hambleton says the museum plans to add once-weekly youth classes to the line-up. Details are included in a summer course brochure available at the museum.

“We really focus on offering great value through our camps and classes,” says Hambleton. “Fees for the sessions are amongst the most reasonable anywhere in Rhode Island and if you’re a member of the Newport Art Museum, you get an even better deal.” Members also receive discounts on many of the museum’s other summer programs including the P.M. Musical Picnic Series and regular classes for all ages offered through the museum’s art school, the Coleman Center for Creative Studies.

Small class sizes, led by professional artists (two for every class or camp plus a volunteer), mean that each child receives lots of personal attention in a safe, kid-friendly environment. “We make good use of the museum’s galleries and the beautiful grounds,” says Hambleton who also adds that the museum’s interior spaces are all air-conditioned.

Fees for the summer youth workshops and art camps vary but range from $40 for members/$50 for non-members to $195 for members/$210 for non-members per session. Summer classes and camps at the Tiverton Four Corners Art Center range from $25 to $115 for members/$130 for non-members. A small materials or studio fee may also apply. Financial assistance is available in some cases.

Classes, camps and workshops are filling up quickly so register early by telephone or in person at the Newport Art Museum’s Education Office in the Coleman Centre for Creative Studies, part pf the museum’s three-building campus on Bellevue Avenue in Newport. The office is open between 9am and 5pm For more information call (401) 848-2787 or visit www.newportartmuseum.com. - -
