In and Out of Providence

Renaissance, Atwell Avenue, Providence RI

By Mat Johnson and Brian Maksymowicz

Going to a club in downtown Providence some nights is just plain tiring. It’s not the actual club or dancing, but everything else that comes with it. Everyone knows that on a Thursday or Friday night that the city streets are going to be packed. Maneuvering around everyone who doesn’t know where they are going and those people who just don’t know how to drive in a city gets old fast.

Google
So what happens when you get to where you want to go; there’s nowhere close to park. And what about once the clubs let out at 1AM? Everyone now has to follow the maze of side streets the police block off to control traffic, packing everyone who stayed until closing on the same streets.

Don’t get us wrong, downtown Providence club nights are fun, but there is only so much of the people, driving and aggravation until it gets a little old.

Recently, we found a great club that’s in Providence, but away from downtown. Renaissance offers a different club atmosphere that’s a welcome change from the traditional clubs in downtown. Federal Hill (Atwells Avenue for non-Rhode Islanders) gives Renaissance its charm.

Renaissance has no elaborate lights or signs on the outside, but if you go at night, you’ll know which one it is for sure. If you’re lost, just look for the line down the street about 10 on Thursday through Saturday nights.

The line is worth the wait because the inside offers a mixture of a comfortable bar area and a modern dance floor with a live DJ and lights. The bar area offers large picture windows that allow club goers to both see in and out easily. Leather chairs and booths around the bar are just enough to offer a resting place at any time during the night. Two bars serve the crowd throughout the night, one in the front, and one in the back dancing area.

The main focal point of the night is the dancing area. Located in the rear of Renaissance, the dance floor utilizes what is by day the restaurant floor, and does so especially well. Although it does get a little hot, we had a great time while we were on the dance floor.

The crowd from night to night varies, but overall it is a good group of people. Proper dress is required and enforced. The security team runs a tight ship to ensure that there are absolutely no problems. We felt very safe while we were there.

Even though Renaissance is a relatively new club in Providence it has a strong following already. The combination of location and atmosphere makes Renaissance an unexpected yet welcome experience. We highly recommend venturing from downtown to Federal Hill to check out Renaissance and be “in and out of Providence.”
