Making a Splash in RI's Nightlife

Harbourside, East Greenwich, RI

By Mat Johnson and Brian Maksymowicz

Not all good night clubs are in Providence. Who would have thought that in historic East Greenwich there would be a completely unique club? Situated literally right on the water, the Harbourside is a seafood restaurant by day and a dance club Wednesday through Sunday nights.

There is an old saying that the success of any business is determined by three factors: location, location and location. Having a club right on the water gives a totally different feeling than your typical night club. Even from the outside you can tell that this is not going to be a normal night of dancing.

Located in downtown East Greenwich, the Harbourside is nestled on the water's edge next to the East Greenwich Marina. Parking on side streets is limited, so they offer valet parking to save you the hassle of finding a spot and walking a block or two.

Harbourside offers two different dining options -- a more formal indoors and a very casual outdoors. It does the same with the clubs; the Harborside has two clubs, each having its own personality but both are equally enjoyable.

Inside offers a large dance floor and an even bigger bar area. The Harbourside offers a wide selection of alcohol along with laid back bartenders, which is a welcome change from some of the other clubs in RI. An indoor DJ spins today's most popular pop and hip-hop music, easily keeping the dance floor filled with people. If the dance floor gets a little too hot, a covered area right above the water can offer some refuge. This spot not only cools you off but also gives a view of the docked boats in Greenwich Cove.

The Harbourside really shines with what goes on outside.

Walking along the deck takes you to the outer dance and bar area. The outside area patrons have an even better view of the East Greenwich's harbor. There is a large open air bar on the left and a huge covered bar in the rear. Even with the capacity to hold three or four bartenders each they still have their hands full, serving steadily to keep everyone satisfied.

The main attraction is the dance floor between the bars. Being outside, you might think that sound quality and volume might be a problem, yet the Harbourside has done a great job keeping those qualities high. To go along with the music there are lights that flash and change colors, adding to the club feel. Hip-hop and rap are the favorite music played outside.

Anywhere you are in the Harbourside you can be assured that there is plenty of security to keep everyone safe. Both Harbourside security and East Greenwich police officers are present throughout the night.

One other aspect that makes the Harbourside unique is that almost anyone with a boat can come and dock next to the building and enter the club. This makes the Harbourside the ideal spot for young boaters to take advantage of premier parking right on the water while making a grand enterance.

So if you're looking for a completely different club scene or a great night spot to show off Rhode Island to visitors from out-of-state, we highly recomend visiting the Harbourside in East Greenwich.

Harbourside is at 40 Water Street in East Greenwich. From Main Street, turn on King's Street and go under the stone railroad bridge. At the end of the street, turn right. Harbourside will be on your left.
