Get that "Euro" Feel

Club Ultra, Providence Rhode Island

By Mat Johnson and Brian Maksymowicz

When thinking about going to a club in Providence, what matters most to you? Is it the atmosphere, the music, the surroundings, the selection of alcohol? Or is it the people that attend? If all of these in mind, Club Ultra offers possibly the best club experience in Rhode Island.

The club offers a very Euro feel with its nontraditional colors, high-tech lighting, and a sound system that made our belt buckles vibrate.

A 30-foot white bar forms the club's centerpiece with an immense set of mirrors running its whole length, offering a matrix of reflections of the entire club from one seat. At the rear of the bar awaits a wide selection of just about any type of alcohol one could wish for. Around the club glowing red lights accent the ashtrays from above -- artistic, edgy, in other words: "the Euro feel".

In various locations around the club elevated platforms support in-house dancers. When facing the dance floor you may experience sensory overload due to a combination of lights, sounds and fog each amplifying your experience. Above the dance floor, a catwalk surrounds the club with a dazzling light and video display that will astonish even the most worldly and jaded club goers.

Their extensive selection of music intertwines modern hip-hop anthems with classic rap and techno favorites to appeal to a diverse dance crowd. When on the dance floor, standing next to the ten-foot wall of speakers may be too much for the faint of hearing, as it will surly vibrate the fillings in your teeth.

If all this proves to be too much, you can always take a break upstairs in a cooler and more secluded area. Two smaller bars there accommodate you during your dance floor breaks. No matter where you go inside the club, whether it is the dance floor, the second floor or the restrooms, the entire club is exceptionally clean.

Of course, a club is only as good as its patrons. As in any club, bumping into people and spilling an occasional drink is possible, but rarely does it turn into a major issue. The club goers are a well-mannered crowd, with disruptive outbursts held in check by a the constant presence of Providence Police and the club's own security force.

Club Ultra offers much more than expected at your normal everyday club. The combination of music and lighting put it in its own class of clubs in RI and receives our highest recommendation.

To find Club Ultra, head on over to 172 Pine Street in Providence. Old timers might remember the location as "Metropolis" or "The Garage".
