Pawtucket is the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution -- here is the first mill in the US, the famous Slater Mill that used water power from the Blackstone River to produce thread. This lead to the development of the "Rhode Island Plan" mill villages throughout the state. Pawtucket is still largely industrial in its feel, with most of the housing dating from before WWII.
Pawtucket offers the state's minor league team, the Pawtucket Redsox, fondly called "Pawsox" by locals. The state's primary Department of Motor Vehicles registry is here, along with a wide variety of businesses. The most interesting restaurants are along Newport Avenue, near Slater Park.
While you're in Pawtucket, check out the Modern Diner -- another Rhode Island invention.
