Exeter, Rhode Island

Exeter, RI

Exeter's 6000 residents live in a rural area, once the homeland of the Narragansett Indians. Today, large swaths of the land are part of the Arcadia Management Area, which includes the small Tomaquag Indian Memorial Museum. The official Narragansett tribal lands are in Charlestown, only a tiny fraction of the lands originally held by the Narragansetts.

The township includes the villages of Exeter, Liberty, Fisherville, Tripps Corner, Pine Hill, Black Plain, and millville.

Of special interest is Stepping Stone Falls, Breakheart Trail, Browning Mill Pond recreation area, and the Wood River, all in the in the Arcadia Management Area. Rhode Island's Yawgoo Valley Ski Area is squeezed into a small valley in the southeast corner of the township. And, if you're traveling down Route 2, you should check out Shartner Farms -- one of RI's best and most successful farm stands, where you can pick your own blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, pumpkins, and flowers (all in their own season, of course). Spring Hill Sugarhouse is also a great choice during maple sugaring (very early spring) and apple pressing (November).

For food, eat at "Middle of Nowhere Diner", just to say that you ate there. Or feast on baked goods, fried red potatos, and fresh fruit at Shartner's. Or, if you're really lucky to be traveling though on the right day and can plan ahead far enough to make reservations, sit in on the banquets held at Exeter Grange.

To get to Exeter, take 95 to exit 5A, which will take you, briefly, east on 102. This will dead-end into 3. Go south on 3 a quarter mile to 102 east, to head toward the east side of the township. Or go a mile farther south on 3 to 165 west, which will take you to Arcadia.
