Gallery Z hosts a show in recognition of National Breast Cancer Month

Adam Perry had barely begun to explore his talents as a photographer, graphic designer, artist, and poet when was diagnosed with germ cell cancer that had spread to his liver and bones. Seven months later, after an agonizing struggle, Adam died on May 29, 2003 at the age of 28. In the months preceding his death, Adam had a dream that there was an exhibition of his photographs. He said quite simply, "It was a nice dream."

Gallery Z’s exhibition in recognition of National Breast Cancer Month is in part a realization of that dream. The photographs taken after he was diagnosed reveal a terrible beauty as evidenced by "Chemo Drip", the title piece selected in the exhibition featured on the cards and posters. He shows cancer from the inside, and its vision is lonely and angry and painful and at the same time, an assertion of creativity in the face of devastation. Even in his illness, Adam found a way to create.

Gallery Z organized and received over 35 pieces of art donated from individual artists both locally and nationally, as well as engaged in local schools to participate and contribute. Artists presented in “What is Cancer? A visual interpretation of Faith, Hope & Struggle” bring their own views of cancer. Some show the horror of having something murderous growing within you while other works show hope and even rapture from remission.

The opening fundraiser reception for the exhibit allowed the public to chat with the artists and discover how their paintings reflect their experiences and views of cancer.

The exhibition and fundraiser benefited the Rhode Island Foundation's donor-advised Healing Ribbons Fund, sponsored by Healing Ribbons, established to distribute funds to local and national organizations that work towards fighting breast cancer. The Healing Ribbons Fund was established by a Lincoln resident who was herself a two-year breast cancer
