Sundays at Sarah’s

A review of an anthology of works by RI women writers

By Audrey Friedman

Sunday’s at Sarah’s is a richly textured collection of the work of an eclectic group of women writers who meet every other Sunday night at the Sarah Doyle House at Brown University. They come together to form a workshop where they hone their works in progress, learn from each other about craft, and establish their own unique voices. This anthology offers its readers an opportunity to sample their short stories, memoirs and poems.

Kathryn Kulpa entertains her readers with a weight loss counselor with a penchant for pastries, a character that quickly has our hearts. In her second story, Kulpa thrusts us into a typical American living room buzzing with the most true-to-life adolescents I have ever met in fiction.

Barbara Schweitzer brings us a skillfully executed narrative poem written in a complex form that centers on a student’s tragic death. Barbara’s range is apparent as we later see a more fanciful approach in her poem about “The Fly.” She has the innate ability of knowing how to enhance her content with varied forms, syntax, and levels of diction.

The anthology’s editor, Martha Manno, charms her audience with “The Woman in the Green Fez,” and Elliot, whose sister Trudy is a dragon. Her complex and fascinating characters propel the reader quickly through her scenes, as does Catherine McCrane Keating in a story of swindle with an unexpected twist that won’t disappoint.

It is certain that a day spent with Sundays at Sarah’s will be one you’ll enjoy.
