Walking through the Art

Celebrate Spring with Newport Gallery Night

By Meaghan Monahan

Did you ever think about going on a walking tour of the diverse art in Newport? Well, the second Thursday of each month is Newport Gallery Night. Hands-on demonstrations, talented artists, and displays will be available at participating galleries all around Newport.

Newport Gallery Night, sponsored by the Newport Gallery Organization, is held the second Thursday of every month from 5 until 8 in the evening at the participating galleries. The Newport Gallery Organization is comprised of 25 members who offer original works from local artists as well as from artisans around the world. Newport Gallery Night provides an outlet for a great diversity of galleries to present their work to the public. Demonstrations, receptions, and occasional entertainment are presented at the participating galleries. Contemporary, historic, traditional and avant-garde pieces are on sale and may be purchased sales tax free throughout Newport.

Spring Bull Gallery at 55 Bellevue Avenue will present a display entitled, "April Fools." The exhibit focuses on having fun with art and seeing something that really is not there or a hidden object in plain view. Local artists will carry the old tradition in art of a trick of the eye. The display will be at Spring Bull Gallery through the month of April.

Cadeaux du Monde located at 26 Mary Street presents informal lectures by owner Katie Dyer featuring Cadeaux du Monde's current collection of modern Guatemalan textiles, comparing them with antique Mayan pieces. Visitors will be given the opportunity to weave on a backstrap loom which is used by the Mayan weavers who live in Guatemala.

The Newport Art Museum located at 76 Bellevue Avenue will be holding a reception from 5 until 7 in the evening during Gallery Night to present "To the Sea: Recent Paintings by Michael Rich." Drawing on his recent stay in Italy, as well as his childhood summers on Nantucket Island, Michael Rich will exhibit his series of landscapes this spring at the Newport Art Museum. He seeks to capture both the special quality of a place and intangible richness of life-long experience of a place in time. Rich's landscapes, in the artist's words, "stand on the frontier of a rediscovery of the experience of the landscape in American art." They will be on exhibition at the Newport Art Museum from April 11-June 1, 2008.

Newport Scrimshanders located at 14 Bowen's Warf has launched an exciting new web presence with and extensive online catalog. Events at the gallery can now be explored through online blogs and the event calendar. Online you will be able to check out samples of custom and restoration work that they have done. Also, as a thank you for all of your support over the years Scrimshanders is offering a 15% discount on your first internet purchase by using the promotional code think spring.

Enjoy a meal after the event! The Newport County Chamber of Commerce has coordinated a restaurant coupon promotion for Gallery Night allowing attendees to pick up a coupon at one of the open galleries and use it at any of the 14 participating restaurants on Gallery Night. Free parking is available during Newport Gallery Night in the downtown area at the Visitors Bureau and at the Newport Art Museum "on the Hill."

A map and brochure for the night is readily available at each participating gallery, online at www.newportgalleries.org, in hotels, inns, and many other local venues.
