Cars and cigarettes, soaps and perfumes, coffee and children’s books – The brand-name Newport has been used to sell products all across the country, from food & clothing to romance novels and linoleum tiles.

Not all of these items are named exclusively for the sea-side community of Newport, RI but a sizable majority of the merchandise bearing the moniker are indeed inspired by the city known as "America’s First Resort".

Like many New England locales, RI’s first capital is the namesake of a city in Great Britain - most likely the coastal city of Newport on the border of England and Wales, or the capital city of the UK’s Isle of Wight. America’s frst "New Port" was founded in 1639 - the oldest American city bearing the name.

By comparison, the other notable US locales with the eminent name of Newport are virtually youngsters. Newport News Virginia, well known for its prestigious shipyards, evolved from the settlement of Warwick River in the late 1860s. Occasionally confused with its East Coast namesake, California’s Newport Beach is a bit younger still, established in the 1880s.

For genuine American history and old-world charm, no other city compares with the original Newport - Rhode Island’s three-and-a-half century old jewel. Beautiful beaches, centuries-old Inns and B&Bs, breathtaking architecture, outstanding ocean vistas, world-renowned festivals and legendary sailing are all among the reasons that the name Newport has come to symbolize excellence to people across the nation.

Newport RI’s appeal has been often imitated, but never equaled. The next time you spot "Newport" gracing the label of a bag of snack chips or a bottle of cologne, keep in mind that there’s nothing like the original!

The Newport County Convention & Visitors Bureau is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of the City of Newport and the five townships of Newport County as a destination resort for business and leisure travel.
