Jamestown, contrary to popular belief, is not an island. The island's proper name is Conanicut Island. Jamestown is the township that includes that island, along with Dutch Island, Gould Island, and a handfull of rocks whose names are known only by local fishermen. Jamestown also includes the villages of Clarks Village, Conanicut Park, Jamestown Shores, and Jamestown.
The old forts that potected the entry to Narragansett Bay are now state parks -- Fort Getty, Beavertail, Fort Wetherill. The old fort on Dutch Island is now part of the Dutch Island Wildlife Management Area.
Of special note are Beavertail's rocky seascapes and lighthouse. They are especially popular at sunset. The small downtown of Jamestown village gives an excellent view of the Newport Bridge. There's also a monument commemorating the treaty between Roger Williams and the Narragansetts in the center of Jamestown's downtown. If you're hungry, you might check out Chopmist Charlie's.
The town is also proud of their restored windmill, the Sydney L. Wright Museum with colonial and indian artifacts, and the Jamestown Museum with its memorabilia from the ferries that connected Conanicut Island to the mainland before the building of the first Jamestown bridge in 1940.
The population of Jamestown is around 5,500.
