Many people say "Point Judith" when they mean the southern portion of Narragansett. Others are more precise, describing Point Judith as the village of Point Judith, which includes the Point Judith lighthouse and describing Galilee as the lively fishing, tourist, and dining area from which one of the Block Island Ferrys departs.

No matter what you call it, this corner of Narragansett has some of the best beaches and restaurants in the state, attracting tourists from inside and outside Rhode Island.

Area beaches include Salty Brine Beach, right at the end of Galilee's restaurant row, Roger Wheeler Beach, and Scarborough Beach. You might enjoy exploring the Galilee Bird Sanctuary, either from the comfort of your car along the Galilee escape road, in the spire of the Fisherman's Memorial, or by slogging in the mud and digging for quahaugs. Fresh fish and lobsters are available right off the boats, or if you prefer, you can charter boats and catch your own.

There is no shortage of restaurants that serve these fresh fish. Some of them are seasonal, but among the best are George's, Champlin's, Sunflower, and Finback's. Outside of Galilee, at the 108/Ocean Road intersection, you'll find Aunt Carrie's, Iggy's, and Spain.

There is a limited amount of camping available at Fisherman's Memorial State Park, just north of the Galilee Escape Road turnoff. There is also a motel in Galilee that is packed during the summer, so for lodging you may have to find a B&B in the Wakefield area, or come in from farther away -- if you don't make reservations early.

To get to Galilee and Point Judith, take Route 1 to Route 108. Go south about three miles. Galilee Escape Road to the right will take you to Galilee. Continuing on another half mile will take you to the junction with Ocean Road, where a sharp right will let you continue down 108 to the end, at Point Judith Lighthouse.
