Block Island Ferry

Block Island Ferry

The ferry travels the twelve and a half miles from Point Judith (Galilee) to Block Island (New Shoreham) in about an hour. Reservations are an almost absolute necessity if you're going to be taking a car, but why bother? Park your car for the day and walk the town. Or take a bicycle (or rent one when you get there).

The parking is often crowded, so leave plenty of time to park in a more remote lot and walk to the ferry. There are many excellent restaurants in the Galilee area, including George's and Finback's.

To get there, head south on Route 4. It will merge with Route 1 and continue south. Continue to Wakefield and exit south on Route 108. Continue about four miles miles to Galilee Escape Road. Turn left onto Great Island Road (it becomes a one-way street), and the ferry will be a couple hundred feet on the right. To find parking for the ferry, circle left on the one-way street, where there will be a remote lot. If you continue around the curve, back to Great Island Road and turn right, there is additional parking.

The ferry's website is at www.blockislandferry.com The high speed ferry (no cars, 30 minutes each way) is at www.islandhighspeedferry.com
