Rhode Island's Primary Artery
Interstate 95 (I-95) is the primary artery through Rhode Island. It travels roughly northeast, starting at the Connecticut border near Ashaway, going through West Bay and Providence, and exiting into Massachusetts at Pawtucket.
The freeway is well maintained and travel is usually smooth and uncongested, though congestion tends to occur around morning and evening commute times in and around Providence.
Travelers between Boston and New York City usually skip this section of I-95, perfering to take I-395 and bypassing the state all together. I-295 bypasses most of the congestion at rush hour by circling west around the city.
I-195 starts at I-95 in Providence and continues east, toward Cape Cod. Highway 146 splits off I-95 at Providence and heads northwest through Woonsocket toward Worchester.
Exits from I-95 are sequentally numbered with a few skipped numbers. Since they are usually designed as cloverleafs, numbering frequently includes an A or B, but there are also exceptions to this rule, too.
