A Home In Africa

A private home in the African bush

For decades, wildlife lovers have dreamt of owning a private home in the African bush. Now, with the launch of African Homesteads by &Beyond (formerly CC Africa) and Tara Getty, fifteen exclusive homeowners can be a part of South Africa’s exceptional Phinda Private Game Reserve, complete with all the luxuries and amenities of an &Beyond Big Five safari lodge. With the recent completion of the first African Homesteads show house, potential buyers can glimpse this unique concept of home ownership in the midst of a private game reserve.

Designed by renowned safari lodge architect, Nick Plewman, in conjunction with &Beyond’s internationally recognized interior designer, Chris Browne, the show homestead features a variety of stylish, safari-inspired interiors and exteriors that homeowners can select for their own bush retreat. Plewman’s architectural design embraces and encompasses the surrounding bush, while Chris Browne has successfully combined local Zulu craft with an abundance of texture and quality contemporary, quirky and classic elements.

Each homestead extends over 8,600-square feet and comprises four large bedroom suites with beautifully appointed bathrooms built around spacious indoor and outdoor areas. There is a fifth ensuite bedroom for the owner’s personal staff. Expansive wooden decks and a large infinity pool overlook the untamed wilderness and the wildlife that passes through it. A retreat-like exercise pavilion overlooking water features, a sensual outdoor shower and a romantic boma are unexpected additions. Carefully chosen sites ensure maximum privacy in a range of breathtaking settings, from rocky mountainsides to rare sand forest and intimate waterholes in the dense bush.

The flexibility of the design allows individual owners to imprint their own personal signature on their luxury homesteads, while adhering to &Beyond’s strict architectural controls maintained to minimize the impact on the environment. &Beyond’s design team work with owners or their personal architects and interior designers to create their personal African homestead.

The African Homesteads concept involves selling 15 private and exclusive luxury homesteads fully managed and maintained by &Beyond within its pristine 56,800-acre Phinda Private Game Reserve. When the owners are in residence, a ranger/tracker team, homestead host, chef and homestead team are on hand to cater to owners’ every need. Each African Homestead is also equipped with its own open 4×4 safari vehicle for unrestricted game drives throughout the reserve. African Homesteads are priced from US$6 million (Rand 51 million) each and are offered on a 72-year leasehold. The purchase price includes traversing rights over the full extent of &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, known for its great viewing of the Big Five (lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalos and elephants).

&Beyond is a pioneer in responsible sustainable tourism, and ecological considerations have been factored into every phase of the Homesteads venture. Utmost care has been taken to ensure the minimal impact outside the confines of the building footprint. No established trees or animals have or will be uprooted or displaced during the construction of any of the African Homesteads.
