Perks and Corks
A bit of laidback fun waiting to be discovered……
RI Travel Article By Linda Eagleson
When I visit Westerly, I feel like I am entering another state all together. Westerly has its own eccentric qualities that aren't like any other city or town in Rhode Island. Being an artist, I love to visit Westerly, filled with all of its art galleries, coffee shops, boutiques, along with it's Five and Dime store and the beautiful Wilcox Park. I feel quite at home when in Westerly, because I can be free spirited and creative. Many artists also tend to flock to this community for that same reason, many of them making Perks and Corks their own living room. ...

Artificial Jellyfish?
URI Research Center Partners with Naval Undersea Warfare Center
RI Article By Todd McLeish
When researchers at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport began to investigate how to create a covert network of widely-distributed underwater sensors, they imagined attaching the sensors to artificial jellyfish that could maintain their place in the water while passing information from one sensor to the next. So the scientists turned to the Center of Excellence in Undersea Technology at the University of Rhode Island, which was established last January in partnership with NUWC to collaborate on a wide range of innovative research and education initiatives. The Center linked NUWC with two URI oceanographers and a Providence College expert in jellyfish locomotion to explore this novel idea. ...

Ice Age in Rhode Island
Loving Rhodey in the Winter
RI Outdoors Article By Linda Eagleson
Sometimes, walking outside in Rhode Island's blistery cold winter weather can feel like we've entered another ice age, especially if you're not prepared for it. Maybe putting on a hat and mittens might help, but even that doesn't enspirit some people to take advantage of the cold weather in Rhode Island. And yes, I do mean what I say when I say "take advantage of the cold weather". No, I'm not crazy by any means. I just loveeeeeeeeeeeee the cold weather! ...

When a new year begins, we all promise ourselves that we are going to change. We promise that we will loose weight, or get a new job, or start a new relationship. Maybe we will promise ourselves that we will finally start to save some money, or go out less, or visit old friends. Or we might even decide that it’s time we finally stopped procrastinating and went on that much-needed vacation. ...

Opulant Fine Dining in Newport
The Spiced Pear, Newport RI
RI Restaurant Review By Paul Pence
There was a day when the Vanderbilts and the Dukes and the Astors and the wealthiest of the Guilded Age would import the most talented chefs and the finest ingredients to Newport, making even their simplest breakfasts an exercise in lavish dining. Since those days, Newport's dining extravagances have stepped back, tending to spend more effort on elegant teas and the occasional historical society gala. Long ago, the best restaurants of Newport started catering to the lobster and seafood tastes of tourists, forgetting their gourmet roots. The Spiced Pear has returned truely fine dining to Newport. ...

Sandwich Heaven
Meeting Street Cafe
RI Restaurant Review By Paul Pence
There are a huge number of delis throughout Rhode Island, and therefore many places to get sandwiches. But while deli sandwiches are usually good, there are only a few sandwich shops that I go out of my way to eat at, and foremost among them is Meeting Street Cafe. ...

Saving the Pallas and Tantae Cannons
Rhode Island History Article By Lt. Joe Giammarco, United Train of Artillery, Rhode Island Militia
The Rhode Island Militia, the town of Warren, and the historic recreation group Federal Blues is working to restore the historic Pallas and Tantae cannons that served our State and Country in the War for American Independence, during the Battle of Rhode Island in August, 1778. These guns, with ornate castings and engravings, remained in a place of honor at the Warren Town Hall until they were stolen in 1981. They were rediscovered in 1994 in one of Roger Williams Park's ponds, cut into pieces and with the indentifying engravings ground off. Now the groups are working together to restore the cannons to their original beauty while maintaining their historical integrity. ...

Cleaner Waters
Rhode Island's Urban Rivers Coming Back To Life
RI Outdoors Article
Most of Rhode Island's rivers offer natural beauty and numerous opportunities for recreation, but Rhode Island's urban rivers were once seen as lost causes, destined to be covered over and used as a convenient way to flush away toxic waste. But thanks to the dedication and work of Rhode Island citizens and a blossoming commitment to a cleaner environment, Rhode Island's rivers are staging a comeback. Fish and wildlife abound in the Blackstone River, the Woonasquatucket and Mussasack Rivers in Providence have been uncovered and turned into a pleasant downtown park, and chemical levels in the Providence and Seekonk rivers have dropped. ...
